About Kehila Legal Clinic

The Kehila Legal Clinic is staffed with upper-year law students that have been trained in legal research and are familiar with the legal systems of Canada and Quebec.

Founded in 2024, we are proudly based in Montreal, where we seek to empower our community with knowledge that can help navigate situations in which that knowledge is needed.

We look forward to helping you with your legal questions!

What we do

Knowledge is power, and we seek to help provide that knowledge. Proudly based in Montreal, we are open to provide legal information on a broad range of subjects.

Areas of Law

Areas of law our caseworkers have helped provide information on include residential lease law, forming a business, civil procedure, contract law, immigration law, and many others.

What we don’t do

Our caseworkers are trained to research questions about Canadian and Quebec law. We don’t know enough to answer questions in other fields.

Legal Advice

Quebec law - specifically the Professional Code, CQLR c C-26 and the Act respecting the Barreau du Québec, CQLR c B-1 make it illegal, in most cases, for a person other than a member of the Quebec Bar to give legal advice and consultations on legal matters.

As such, our caseworkers are not allowed to provide legal advice. We cannot, for example, recommend a specific course of conduct a person should take in an actual or potential legal proceeding. We cannot interpret the law, or court rules or procedures. And we cannot apply the law to an individual person's specific factual circumstances.

What we can do is provide references to Quebec law, and note how courts have tended to understand the law in the past. Going any further is a line we cannot cross.

Areas of law

There are also some fields of law we do not take on. These include criminal and tax law.
